Gaps #11 &#8211; A median sized problem with 10 solutions from the RSS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rss.org.uk\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Statistical Society<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (<strong>RSS<\/strong>) and I have published two articles to help employers better calculate and interpret their gender pay gaps.\u00a0 The first article lists 10 recommendations to improve the quality of gender pay gap reporting, the second is an article in Significance magazine which explores in more detail, two of the recommendations concerning medians and quartiles.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I am an active member of the RSS and have worked with them on many issues.\u00a0 When I became concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/1-in-10-orgs-published-incorrect-gender-pay-gap-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statistical errors being published<\/a> in the first round of gender pay gap reporting in 2018, I shared my concerns with the RSS using my blog post &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/gender-pay-gap-data-and-12-ways-to-improve-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>My 12 steps to improve public confidence in gender pay gap data<\/em>&#8220;.<\/a>\u00a0 This led to two collaborations which resulted in these two articles being published.\u00a0 To read them, <strong>please click on the relevant heading href=\"https:\/\/www.rss.org.uk\/RSS\/media\/News-and-publications\/Publications\/Reports%20and%20guides\/RSS-s-10-Proposed-Reforms-for-Gender-Pay-Gap-Reporting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>&#8220;10 Recommendations to Improve the Quality of Gender Pay Gap Reporting&#8221;<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This was <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.org.uk\/news-publication\/news-publications\/2019\/general-news-(1)\/rss-releases-ten-recommendations-for-gender-pay-ga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published by the <strong>RSS<\/strong> in April 2019<\/a> and explores ten ways whereby gender pay gap reporting can be made more reliable and more informative.\u00a0 The full document is 10 pages long but the <strong>RSS<\/strong> also released a <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/RSS-gender-pay-gap-Infographic-top-10.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>1-page infographic which summarises the 10 recommendations<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0which I strongly recommend you download and circulate to interested parties.<\/p>\n<p><img expanded on the reasons for these 10 recommendations in a talk at the annual conference of the Royal Statistical Society in Belfast in September 2019.\u00a0 <a noreferrer\"><strong><em>&#8220;Gender Pay Gaps &#8211; A Median Sized Problem&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>This article was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/toc\/17409713\/2019\/16\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 2019 edition of Significance<\/a>.\u00a0 In it, I explore in more detail recommendations number 2 &amp; 6 from the RSS&#8217; 10 recommendations above.\u00a0 Recommendation 2 asks for better guidance on how to calculate the relevant statistics including the median and in the article, I explain what a median is and isn&#8217;t and why it creates so much confusion.\u00a0 Recommendation 6 asks for the median gender pay gap to be calculate for each &#8220;income quartile&#8221; and in the article, I explain what a quartile is, why it is a misnomer in this instance and how it has the potential to be much more informative as to why pay gaps exist in this first place.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not heard of <a href=\"https:\/\/rss.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/17409713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/a> before, it is a statistics magazine jointly published by the <strong>RSS<\/strong> and the <strong>ASA<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amstat.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Statistical Association<\/a>) and aims to explain statistical topics to a non-statistical audience.\u00a0 It is intended to be similar to New Scientist or the Economist magazines in the way issues are
