England Men&#8217;s Club Football 1889 to 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2024\/25 football season is over and it is 76 days since my team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nufc.com\/2024-25html\/2025-03-16liverpool-n-lcf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newcastle Utd last won a trophy<\/a>!\u00a0 For the first time in my life, I am able to record Newcastle United in a winners column in my spreadsheet listing all English trophy winners (Men&#8217;s) since 1889.\u00a0 For the first time ever, Crystal Palace appear as a trophy winner.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My spreadsheet <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/English-Club-Records-Football-Men-2025-v1.0.xlsx\">English Club Records &#8211; Football &#8211; Men &#8211; 2025 &#8211; v1.0<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>is up to date as of 31st May 2025.\u00a0 All data in this file has been sourced from Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>The spreadsheet has a number of worksheets which I now explain in more detail.\u00a0 Please note all are protected but there is no password if you want to unprotect a worksheet.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Data1889-2025England<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This worksheet lists all winners of the three main domestic trophies in England i.e. Premier League (League Championship until 1992), FA Cup and League Cup.\u00a0 It starts in <strong>1889<\/strong> which is the year the League Championship started.\u00a0 The FA Cup began before that date but I have ignored that data.\u00a0 I have also shown the runner ups in all competitions as I think that can be useful in identifying the good teams of the past.\u00a0 Finally I also include the 3rd &amp; 4th placed teams in the league and the semi finalists for the Champions League since they represent of the summit of achievement for club football.<\/p>\n<p>The sheet also shows any English club that won a European trophy or was a losing finalist in one of those competitions.\u00a0 Finally winners of various doubles are shown.\u00a0 Note Treble winners are not shown but can be spotted if they appear as multiple double winners in the same year e.g. Man City in 2019.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>RankingsEngland<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This worksheet allows you to see which teams were the best in any time period.\u00a0 To do this, change the years shown in cells B1 (From year) and B2 (To year).\u00a0 You can then sort by any of the columns to find out which team was top.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6294\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1432\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025.png 1432w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-1024x423.png 1024w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-768x317.png 768w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-450x186.png 450w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-1320x545.png 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1432px) 100vw, 1432px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For each team, I have counted how many times the team won the relevant trophy or was a runner up.\u00a0 Columns D to V should be obvious but I have added some further statistics in columns X to AE.\u00a0 These are explained below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Number of <strong>SUMMITS<\/strong> reached i.e. number of League Titles and European Cups\/Champion Leagues won.\u00a0 For any club, these two competitions represent the summit of achievement a club can reach and history generally looks at these when describing great teams of the past.<\/li>\n<li>Number of <strong>TROPHIES<\/strong> won.\u00a0 Silverware is what all fans crave but I am only considering the six trophies recorded in <strong>Data1889-2025England<\/strong>.\u00a0 Other minor &amp; one-off trophies are not counted.<\/li>\n<li>Number of <strong>POINTS<\/strong> won.\u00a0 Not all trophies are equally regarded.\u00a0 At the same time, when considering GOATs, I do think consideration should be given to runner up spots.\u00a0 After all, in an FA Cup final between two equally matched teams, anything can happen and luck does play a part.\u00a0 For non-Summit trophies, I give <strong>3<\/strong> points to a winner and<strong> 1<\/strong> point to a runner up.\u00a0 For summit trophies I double these points i.e. <strong>6<\/strong> points to a winner, <strong>2<\/strong> points to a runner up and <strong>1<\/strong> point for finishing 3rd\/4th in the league or semi finalists in the Champions League.\u00a0 However, <strong>you can change these points by editing the relevant yellow cells in row 1<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Number of Wins &amp; Runner ups which I denote as <strong>T-RU.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>RECORD<\/strong> which is a summary of a team&#8217;s record using the format &#8220;<strong>Sw &#8211; Tw | Sr &#8211; Tr<\/strong>&#8220;.\u00a0 <strong>Sw<\/strong> is the number of summits reached and <strong>Tw<\/strong> is the number of other trophies won (excluding summits).\u00a0 <strong>Sr<\/strong> is the number of runner ups to summits and <strong>Tr<\/strong> is the number of runner ups to other trophies (excluding summits).\u00a0 So my team Newcastle Utd has an overall record of <strong>4-8 | 2-9<\/strong>\u00a0since they&#8217;ve won <strong>4<\/strong> league titles, <strong>6<\/strong> FA Cups, <strong>1<\/strong> League Cup (this season!!) and <strong>1<\/strong> UEFA cup, were twice runner up in the league and have lost 9 cup finals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>GOATsEngland<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This is a summary of the top teams for three different eras as below.\u00a0 All data comes from the <strong>RankingsEngland<\/strong> sheet but this sheet is not updated automatically.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>1889-today (All Time)<\/strong>: The football league was created in 1888 with Preston NE winning the first title in 1889.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1956-today (European Era)<\/strong>: This is when European club football started with the European Cup in 1956 and the Cup Winners Cup &amp; UEFA Cup (known as Fairs Cup then) in 1960.\u00a0 1960 also saw the introduction of the League Cup.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1993-today (Modern Era)<\/strong>: The Premier League era started in the 1992\/93 season whilst at the same time, the European Cup morphed into the Champions League.\u00a0 In particular, the strongest leagues were allowed more than one entrant.\u00a0 Around the same time, the UEFA cup final switched to a straight final instead of a 2-legged affair in 1998 and the Cup Winners Cup was abolished in 1999 (reintroduced as Conference League in 2021\/22 season).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>By the way, you may find <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/sporting-goats-1-english-football-clubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this earlier post of mine about GOATs (Greatest Of All Time) of interest<\/a>.\u00a0 It is where I first came up with the graphic below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6295\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1272\" height=\"615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B.png 1272w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B-1024x495.png 1024w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B-768x371.png 768w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/GOAT-EngFC-Men-2025-B-450x218.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1272px) 100vw, 1272px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Dynasties<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This lists <strong>5<\/strong> dynasties I have identified using the criteria shown but I do not regard all <strong>5<\/strong> as equally dynastic.\u00a0 I explain all the details in this article &#8220;<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/winners-english-football-clubs-dynasties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Are Man City now a Dynasty<\/a>?<\/em><\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Data1956-2025UEFAclubs<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This lists the winners and runner ups from all countries to the 3 main trophies offered by UEFA i.e.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Champions League<\/strong> &#8211; Started in 1956 and was known as the European Cup until 1993<\/li>\n<li><strong>Europa League<\/strong> &#8211; Started in 1958 as the Fairs Cup, became the UEFA cup in 1972, switched a straight final instead of a 2-legged final in 1998, added a group stage in 2005 and was renamed the Europa League in 2010.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conference League<\/strong> &#8211; Started in 2022.\u00a0 A previous incarnation as the Cup Winners Cup started in 1960 and ended in 1999.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>RankingsUEFA<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Like the <strong>RankingsEngland<\/strong> worksheet, here you can summarise European performance by club.\u00a0 The format here is slightly different to <strong>RankingsEngland<\/strong> but you should be able to figure out the differences.\u00a0 This sheet also summarises European performance by country as well.\u00a0 Note there are a lot of flags which are a legacy of a copy and paste from Wikipedia and are tiresome to delete!<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Data1956-2025UEFAcountries<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>This worksheet is exactly the same as <strong>DATA1956-2025UEFAclubs<\/strong> except only countries are shown rather than clubs.\u00a0 As far as possible, I&#8217;ve used today&#8217;s countries rather than historical countries so it is Germany rather than East &amp; West Germany and its Croatia, Serbia, etc rather than Yugoslavia.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve used this to determine which countries were dominant in Europe by tracking the rolling 5 year average of % of finals contested by clubs from England, Spain, Italy, Germany &amp;
