{"id":2023,"date":"2019-10-30T23:44:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T23:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2019-11-04T08:21:48","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T08:21:48","slug":"rugby-world-cup-who-will-win-in-2019-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/rugby-world-cup-who-will-win-in-2019-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Rugby World Cup #4 &#8211; Who will win in 2019? &#8211; Final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>England will take on South Africa in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final this weekend and I am predicting a win for England by 1 to 6 points.\u00a0 In other words, it will be close and exciting!<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As of today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world.rugby\/rankings\/mru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World&#8217;s Rugby Rankings for the 20 teams<\/a> taking part in the 2019 World Cup are as listed in order here.\u00a0 Since Japan is the host nation, 3<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2033\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-9-159x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-9-159x300.png 159w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-9-186x350.png 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/> points have been added to their ranking points. It should be noted that Namibia are in fact in 23rd place in the full rankings but 3 teams ahead of them (Spain, Romania &amp; Portugal) failed to qualify.<\/p>\n<p>The table also shows the change in ranking points over the whole World Cup for each team and the extent to which each team has outperformed their expected performance using my <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>EXPWIN<\/strong><\/span> model which has been the basis of my forecasting.\u00a0 You can find out more about <strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">EXPWIN (&amp; HIGHRANK<\/strong><\/span> performed and <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/rugby-world-cup-who-will-win-in-2019-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">you can read my conclusions here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>England set for Glory?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Here is how the quarter-finals and semi-finals worked out along with my prediction for the final.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2029 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10-300x155.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10-768x397.png 768w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10-1024x530.png 1024w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10-450x233.png 450w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/WC19-10.png 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>England are 1.6 ranking points ahead of South Africa which makes for a very close match.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>EXPWIN<\/strong><\/span> predicts England to win by 1 point with only a 53% chance of winning.\u00a0 Both England &amp; South Africa have outperformed <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>EXPWIN<\/strong> <\/span>to the same extent so the expected margin of victory doesn&#8217;t change.\u00a0 In other words it&#8217;s a toss up.<\/p>\n<p>The good news for England fans is <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/rugby-world-cup-who-will-win-in-2019-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my model evaluation showed that<\/a> the stronger teams have been underestimated by between 0 &amp; 10 points with an average of 5 points.\u00a0 On that basis, my prediction is then revised to an England win by 6 points and a 2\/3 chance of winning.\u00a0 Looking at odds offered by bookies as of today,\u00a0 I am seeing the most common odds are 9\/4 on for England and 7\/4 for South Africa which is basically the same as my revised odds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">What does History say?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Using history as a baseline for a forecast is a perfectly valid method.\u00a0 You can see an example of this in my post about <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/us-presidential-election-2020-1-will-donald-trump-win-a-2nd-term-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the odds of President Trump being reelected in 2020<\/a>.\u00a0 When it comes to one-off matches like a World Cup Final, it&#8217;s probably less useful but it can serve as a good sense check of any forecast especially if one side is apparently overwhelming favourites.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rugby_World_Cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">history has to say about Rugby World Cup finals<\/a>.\u00a0 I start by listing the finals in chronological order.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1987: <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> 29-9 France<\/li>\n<li>1991: <strong>Australia<\/strong> 12-6 England<\/li>\n<li>1995: <strong>South Africa<\/strong> 15-12 New Zealand<\/li>\n<li>1999: <strong>Australia<\/strong> 35-12 France<\/li>\n<li>2003: <strong>England<\/strong> 20-17 Australia<\/li>\n<li>2007: <strong>South Africa<\/strong> 15-6 England<\/li>\n<li>2011: <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> 8-7 France<\/li>\n<li>2015: <strong>New Zealand<\/strong> 34-17 Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The omens I see from this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South Africa get to a final every 12 years and have won it every time so far<\/li>\n<li>South Africa will score 15 points.<\/li>\n<li>South Africa now join 4 other nations in taking part in their 3rd final.\u00a0 The other 4 have all lost at least one final out of 3.<\/li>\n<li>England lose a final and then win a final 12 years later.<\/li>\n<li>When England lose, they only score 6 points.<\/li>\n<li>France are like South Africa in playing a final every 12 years so they will be finalists in 2023!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make of all that what you will.<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest and most pertinent historical fact is that all 8 winners so far went through the tournament unbeaten.\u00a0 In 5 finals (&#8217;87, &#8217;95, &#8217;99, &#8217;03, &#8217;15) both finalists were unbeaten up to that point so that outcome was guaranteed but in 3 finals (&#8217;91, &#8217;07, &#8217;11), one finalist had lost a pool game and went onto lose the final though not by much it must be said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>My articles on the 2019 Rugby World Cup<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/rugby-world-cup-who-will-win-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Who will win in 2019 &#8211;
