Where do I start with the most abnormal April on record!?\u00a0 Believe or not after the sunniest April on record for the UK in 2020, 2021 bear even that but it didn’t stop there.\u00a0 April 2021 was also the frostiest on record by a long way, lowest ever rain intensity, 3rd highest daily temperature range and the 4th driest on record.\u00a0 You’ll never top that says April 2021!

The meteorological year starts in December which is why December appears as the 1st data point in the charts below.\u00a0 More information on the layout of the charts can be found in this pos<\/a>t.\u00a0 Points lying between the upper and lower deciles are shown as open black circles, points lying between the deciles and minimum\/maximum are shown as solid black circles and any month with a new record is shown as solid black squares.\u00a0 All data is supplied by the Met Office and can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Every month I update 7 charts in all.\u00a0 I rotate which 6 appear in the deck above and \"\"plot the 7th as a separate chart here.\u00a0 In Spring & Summer, Frost (chart G) is shown here since that is of least interest in these months.\u00a0 At least it was until April 2021 when the record was smashed!<\/p>\n

How abnormal was April 2021?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\"\"Chart H displays my UK Weather Abnormality Index<\/strong><\/span> (see my May 2019 post for details<\/a>).\u00a0 The closer to zero this index is, the less abnormal and thus more “average” a month is.\u00a0 The higher it is, the more abnormal the month is.\u00a0 When the index is over 100%, we can describe the month as unusual in some way.<\/p>\n

The abnormality index was 150% this month, smashing the previous April high of 127% for the last 61 years.\u00a0 This is not surprising given that this month was the sunniest, frostiest and least stormiest on record plus the joint 3rd widest daily temperature range and 4th driest!<\/p>\n
