Nations #11 &#8211; Who will win in 2018? &#8211; Week 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Be careful of what you wish for!\u00a0 Two weeks ago, I said <a href=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/6-nations-10-who-will-win-in-2018-week-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I was hoping for an error in my predictions based on World Rugby&#8217;s rankin<\/a>gs and I finally got one and it was Scotland overturning my team England &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->World Rugby&#8217;s goal is that rankings can be used as a predictive tool.\u00a0 The idea is to take each team&#8217;s current ranking and add 3 points to teams playing at home.\u00a0 Whoever has the higher ranking is <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-956\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic1-136x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"156\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic1-136x300.png 136w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic1-159x350.png 159w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic1.png 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 156px) 100vw, 156px\" \/>then expected to win but the closer the rankings, the closer the game is expected to be.\u00a0 The current World Rugby rankings as of 5th March 2018 is shown to the right along with their ranking points and the change (if any) from the previous week.<\/p>\n<p>So far, my success rate is 35 correct predictions out of 43 matches involving 6 Nations teams in the 2017 &amp; 2018 6 Nations and the 2017 Autumn Internationals broken down as follows:-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Where the ranking gap was less than 3 points &#8211; Out of 11 matches, 7 were correctly called.<\/li>\n<li>Where the ranking gap was between 3 &amp; 6 points &#8211; Out of 11 matches, 7 were correctly called.<\/li>\n<li>Where the ranking gap was 7 points or more &#8211; out of 21 matches, all were correctly called.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These figures are <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-952 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic3-300x246.png\" alt=\"\" https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic3.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/>shown by the black line in the next chart.\u00a0 What I did here was build a logistic regression model to estimate the probability that the prediction would be correct given a certain ranking gap and this shown by the green bars (shaded differently for each of the 3 groups above).\u00a0 Such a model allows me to add an additional feature to my predictions, the chances of my predictions being correct.<\/p>\n<p>You can see these probabilities in the next table (PROB column) which lists my predictions for the 2018 6 Nations along with actual results.\u00a0 As of now, it is only week 4 that can be counted as a true prediction with the other weeks treated as indicative for now.\u00a0 This is because World Rugby will update the ranking points after each week which of course will lead to different predictions.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at the accuracy of my predictions, it does appear that the threshold for accuracy is a ranking gap of 7 points.\u00a0 Above, my predictions are perfect, belo<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-957\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic2-300x197.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic2-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic2-450x296.png 450w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic2.png 529w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/>w that I am right 2 out 3 times.\u00a0 This suggests that the figures in the PROB column based on the fitted green bars may not be the best model.\u00a0 Now that I have 43 matches to look at, I decided to look at the correlation between the ranking gap and the actual gap in the scores.\u00a0 The scatter plot below shows the ranking gap for the stronger team on the horizontal axis and the difference in actual scores between the stronger and weaker <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-954 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic5-300x251.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic5-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic5-419x350.png 419w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic5.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/>teams on the vertical axis.\u00a0 Doing it this way, means that a negative score is representing a prediction error.<\/p>\n<p>I have highlighted the 3 tournaments separately and added a line of best fit for each.\u00a0 You can see that both 6 nations are very similar whilst the line for Autumn Internationals is a little flatter suggesting that large ranking gaps result in smaller score gaps than in the 6 Nations.\u00a0 I explored this further by building a multivariate regression model and I discovered that the more important factor is whether the stronger team is playing at home or away.<\/p>\n<p>As the next chart shows, the difference is quite stark.\u00a0 When playing at home, stronger teams with a small ranking gap are expected to have a score gap of at least 10 points but if they are playing very weak teams, the expected score<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-955\" src=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic6-300x246.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic6-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic6-427x350.png 427w, https:\/\/marriott-stats.com\/nigels-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6Nations11-pic6.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/> gap is not notably higher.\u00a0 However, when the stronger team plays away with a small ranking gap, the expected score gap is actually negative i.e. the weaker home team is expected to win.
