Survey Design & Analysis

Marriott Statistical Consulting has been involved in helping organisations conduct complex research for over 12 years.  Our experience encompasses many different sectors and industries including: Manufacturing, Market Research, Recruitment, Insurance, Utilities, Social Care, Probation Services & Dating Sites. Our breadth of experience allows us to understand your objectives and the larger business context that they fit into. By understanding your objectives, we are able to help with the design of your survey & trials so as to ensure that you are able to generate the maximum amount of insight from the minimum amount of data.  Once your data has been collected, we are able to apply a very wide range of statistical methods to generate the actionable insights needed to make decisions. By using our very own Survey Wheel methodology, we have consistently amazed our clients with the insights we have obtained from their surveys.

Key Drivers Analysis & Segmentation

Many surveys involve measurement of some key outcome (such as patient satisfaction, crop yield, likelihood to buy, etc) in addition to measurement of certain inputs & other details.  Our Key Drivers analyses will identify which of the details are the key to explaining the outcomes.  In many cases, we have found that our Key Drivers Analyses are enhanced if a Segmentation analysis is carried out beforehand. Through segmentation, we split the target population into subpopulations and then carry out separate Key Driver Analyses for each sub population.  Although these techniques may appear to be “rocket science”, we are exceptional in our ability to explain such analyses to non-technical audiences and making the insights easy to understand.

Sample Design

Working closely with your research teams, the first step for us is to define the target population e.g. all the individuals/households etc that are relevant to your objectives. We will then identify the best method of sampling for this population, as well as working out the requisite sample size to deliver the statistical power and discrimination needed. Finally, we will pull all these elements together into a single sampling plan that can be easily implemented by your staff or contractors.

Decision Rules

If you are sampling products or assets in order to make a decision e.g. ‘Are products fit for sale?’, ‘Do assets need replacement?’, ‘Have the contractual requirements been met?’, etc, then we are able to build statistically robust and appropriate decision rules for your organisation. Using statistical thinking, we can ensure that these rules take into account your requirements in terms of false positive and false negative risks. In many cases, your sampling & decision rules will be driven by regulatory requirements and we have ample experience of helping organisations meet these.

Measurement & Questionnaire Design

We have experience in working with all survey types: from face to face interviews, web surveys, product inspections, field surveys and postal questionnaires and we can advise as to which is the most appropriate for your objectives. We apply qualitative research methods to designing and revising surveys so you can be sure your study is fine-tuned for measurement validity, readability, repeatability, reproducibility, discrimination & statistical power.
