UK Weather Trends #32 – Summer 2024

September 4, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

The 2024 meteorological summer in the UK was unremarkable on all weather variables.  In fact 2024 was so unremarkable that it is in fact the most “normal” summer of the last 114 years when I compare the data to the last 50 years which I regard as “living memory”.

UK Weather Tracker #91 – August 2024

September 4, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

The UK weather in August 2024 was unremarkable.  That means all 3 months of the meteorological summer were unremarkable to varying degrees.

UK Weather Tracker #90 – July 2024

August 4, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

The UK weather in July 2024 was the most normal on record, not just for July but for any month since 1960!  All statistics were close or equal to the median value observed since records began.  I bet that will generate endless headlines…

UK Weather Tracker #89 – June 2024

July 8, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

I’m sure June 2024 felt like a cold month to you.  In fact, compared to the last 50 years, it was entirely normal.  However, it was colder than May which is unusual but it happened this year because May 2024 was supposedly the hottest May on record.

UK Weather Trends #31 – Spring 2024

June 4, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

Spring 2024 in the UK was the hottest on record.  In some ways this is surprising given it was also the 10th dullest and 6th wettest spring on record which is inconsistent with trends over last 25 years and with the typical correlations seen in spring.  With any other dataset, I would ask for a check on the temperature data to see if it is correct.

UK Weather Tracker #88 – May 2024

June 4, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

This was the warmest May on record in the UK which surprised me at first when I saw the data.  Then I saw that where I live (in the South West), it was the 3rd warmest but everywhere else in the UK set a new record.  Notably, the new temperature record was set despite below average sunshine and normal rainfall which may be another reason why I was surprised by the new temperature record.  Finally, as I pointed out in June last year, statistically the previous record looked artificially low relative to the upper decile so a new record is perhaps not that great a surprise.

UK Weather Tracker #87 – April 2024

May 5, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

The weather in the UK in April 2024 was abnormal but not in the way I thought.  My wife and I ended the month with stinking colds so surely it was a colder April than but no, the Met Office insists it was above.  It was noticeably darker and wetter than normal with this April being the 6th wettest on record.

UK Weather Tracker #86 – March 2024

April 7, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

It was warmer than normal in the UK in March 2024 but otherwise the weather was unremarkable.

UK Weather Trends #30 – Winter 2024

March 3, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

Winter 2024 in the UK was the 5th sunniest & 8th wettest on record.  A year ago I postulated UK winters were entering a new era of being warm, wet & sunny.  I am now certain this is the case and my favoured hypothesis is that our winters are following a steady trend which began in the early 1980s.

UK Weather Tracker #85 – February 2024

March 3, 2024 By Nigel Marriott

Did you enjoy the 2nd warmest February on record?  Probably not as you may have been dealing with the 8th wettest February on record in the UK instead which in the South was actually the wettest on record.
