Pay Gap Trends #6 – Are we there yet?

May 10, 2023 By Nigel Marriott

Has 6 years of mandatory gender pay gap reporting (GPGR) made a dent in the UK’s gender pay gap?  According to a recent BBC article, not one bit at all.  Unfortunately, too many people on social media have been taken in by this misleading article and I will be submitting a formal complaint to the BBC soon to get it amended.  I rebutted this at the time with this LinkedIn post and I will now expand on that here to show what the true trend is and whether or not mandatory pay gap reporting has had an impact.

UK Economy Tracker #10 – 2022 Q3

November 16, 2022 By Nigel Marriott

UK Inflation has risen sharply since the start of 2022 and dominates the media and politics today.  It is now having knock on effects, most notably on wage rises which are lagging behind inflation.  The aftermath of the COVID19 induced recession continues to be considerable economic uncertainty.

Pay Gaps #27 – Don’t mention the Disability Pay Gap!

June 11, 2022 By Nigel Marriott

“I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it!”

Basil Fawlty didn’t get away with it in Torquay and neither did this manager.

HR Manager – “Our disability pay gap is zero which surprises me”

Me – “How many disabled employees do you have?”

My response sums up my view on Disability Pay Gap Reporting (DPGR).  The manager commented on their pay gap whilst I queried their employment gap.  As a statistician who happens to be disabled, I consider the conventional disability pay gap statistic to be at best irrelevant and at worse a lie.

UK Economy Tracker #8 – 2022 Q1

May 31, 2022 By Nigel Marriott

Whilst COVID19 was ravaging the world in 2020 & 2021, I felt there was little point in updating my quarterly UK Economy Tracker.  Now the pandemic over in the UK, it’s time to see how much damage the pandemic did to the economy.  Going forward, the future is very uncertain but I hope by placing the latest data in the context of the past, I can discern what pointers I should keep an eye on.

Pay Gap Trends #5 – Has pay gap reporting narrowed the gender pay gap?

May 13, 2022 By Nigel Marriott

Disinterested employers were 20% less likely than engaged employers to have narrowed their UK gender pay gap between 2017 & 2021 .  I draw this conclusion from a statistical model using ~6,000 employers which removed the effect of confounders such as size, sector, furlough, gender ratio, etc.  Once accounted for, I found 61% of those reporting their pay gap for 2019 had narrowed their pay gap by 2021 compared to 55% of those not reporting 2019 data.

All I want for Christmas is football!

December 21, 2021 By Nigel Marriott

Will there be any football this Christmas?  The Omicron variant of COVID19 is wreaking havoc with football and rugby schedules and the traditional Boxing Day lineup is in danger of being cancelled.  So what will football fans do instead?  The good news is I am giving a Christmas present to all football supporter that is almost as good as the real thing.  All you need are 2 packs of playing cards, a pen and paper or a spreadsheet and you can play a simple football simulation game which guarantees fun and excitement for all.

Pay Gaps #25A – House of Common’s debate on Ethnicity Pay Gaps – My thoughts

September 27, 2021 By Nigel Marriott

The UK Parliament debated Ethnicity Pay Gap Reporting (EPGR) on 20th September 2021 in Westminster Hall.  Seven MPs spoke in the hour long debate and, as debates go, I thought it was actually quite good.  There was cross party consensus on the merits of EPGR but I saw a divide between those who recognise EPGR is complex and requires trade offs and those who think the complexities of EPGR can be solved with government guidance.

Pay Gap Trends #4 – Did the UK gender pay gap narrow in 2020?

September 5, 2021 By Nigel Marriott

This article was last updated using data submitted as of 4th September 2021.

In February 2021, the EHRC confirmed that all employers with a headcount of 250 employees or more would have to submit their gender pay gaps based on the 2020 snapshot date.  Due to the lateness of this confirmation, they also stated that no enforcement action would be taken prior to the end of September 2021.  As result, fewer employers than expected have reported 2020 data so far so I have used two methods of imputation to estimate that the median gender pay gap among these employers narrowed by 0.2 to 0.3 pence in the pound in 2020.

Pay Gaps #22 – My 7 + 5 recommendations for amending UK pay gap legislation

June 30, 2021 By Nigel Marriott

When gender pay gap reporting was introduced by the government for the 2017 snapshot date for all employers with a headcount of 250 or more, it was made clear they would evaluate how the legislation had worked after 5 years.  We are now in the 5th year of pay gap reporting and I would like to submit to the government 7 recommendations to improve the way employers’ data is reported and 5 recommendations to improve the data used in the calculations and to reduce various distortions.
